The Chamber of Commerce yesterday hosted a seminar in Chester to educate business owners about online marketing and provide a basic insight into Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Pay Per Click (PPC). As Moo Marketing provides Pay Per Click Management services in Chester and the North West we were in attendance.
The morning seminar and network session provided a good simple introduction to SEO and PPC to an audience of eighty business owners who all understood the importance of online marketing but few have the time or the knowledge to setup or manage such online marketing campaigns.
Although the event was informative there was only so much information that people could take onboard and little emphasis during the event was put on website analytics, the most crucial aspect of your online marketing campaigns. Before investing in and implementing any form of online marketing you must be sure that the campaign will provide an acceptable level of return in order to justify the initial spend.

Rumours and speculation are appearing in the blogosphere about a possible merger or sale of MySpace by current owners News Corp to Yahoo! It is thought that News Corp is willing to swap MySpace for a significant stake holding of Yahoo! shares. The monetary value of the shares News Corp have said they will do the deal for is in the region of $11 billion.
Yahoo! have been dramatically losing users to their main rival Google over recent years and with the recent departure of Terry Semel from Yahoo major change is not only inevitable but a requirement if Yahoo! are to reclaim users.
The question has to be asked however, would the acquisition of MySpace for an $11 billion stake in the company actually help restore Yahoo! to their former glory years?

Many businesses experience busy periods throughout the year. Whether it is Christmas, Valentine’s Day or the like. Planning a marketing campaign for these periods should not be left to the last moment as a successful campaign can increase the visitor volumes and sales revenue.
Achieving better natural results from search engine queries takes time. A website’s structure and content must be optimised and the exposure must be increased. Pay Per Click (PPC) is a effective way of getting quick results were as using Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can take more time but once established can return long term results. Thinking ahead and planning a medium to long term marketing strategy can increase revenue and allow your site to develop and maintain a competitive advantage over competitors’ websites.
Identifying when busy periods occur for your business and optimising your web page accordingly can reinforce existing sales strengths just as targeted seasonal advertising can help boost revenue over a longer period to benefit your business.
Successful search engine optimisation (SEO) should not be used like Christmas tree lights and only considered for the few weeks around Christmas but should be developed continually throughout the year.

Yesterday morning we decided to download Firefox 3 which was officially released 17/06/08. It turns out that 5.5 million other users had beaten us to it. SpreadFirefox.com are trying to set a world record for “most software downloaded in 24 hours” and the tracking counter has maintained pace and surpassed 8 million worldwide downloads by the time of writing this blog.
Such a rapid acceptance of a new browser shows the consumer support Firefox now has. Considering this Firefox users are likely to represent a substantial percentage of site visitors. Designing site that is compatible and maintains functionality when viewed in Firefox is no longer a benefit of a site design but a necessity.
Firefox is an open source project that allows developers to create additions (add-ons) to increase Firefox’s functionality and allow users to personalise their browser. Managing to understand how these add-ons (and updated features) of Firefox 3 affect a users browsing habits is difficult task but may lead to new or improved ways to market websites or increase brand awareness.
EDIT – 25 June 2008 – Firefox downloads are up to 20million one week on from release, and its been announced that Firefox’s market share increased last month by 0.75% to 19.17% and IE lost ground down to 72.95% (A 0.8% drop)
EDIT – 07 July 2008 – Its offical firefox have got the world record 8,002,530 copies of firefox 3.0 were download on launch daya.
The company’s server logs have been verified by Gareth Deaves, of Guinness World Records, who commented that it was ’an extremely impressive accomplishment’.
