Way back in 2007 we posted a very excited blog about Cisco’s annual report and its projections for the future of internet traffic. By 2012, we reported, internet traffic was set to reach half a zettabyte. That’s a huge amount. As we explained three years ago:
“What is a Zettabyte? Let’s start with the more commonly known gigabyte and work from there.
Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes
Terabyte = 1000 Gigabytes
Petabyte = 1000 Terabytes
Exabyte = 1000 Petabytes
Zettabyte = 1000 Exabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes”
Fastforward to now, 2010. According to the latest figures available, the “digital universe” is currently approx 0.8 zettabytes; around 300 exabytes larger than we estimated it would be by 2012. It’s forecast to exceed the zettabyte at some point this year.
While we may have got the figures wrong – and by quite a margin – we were right on the causes behind the increase in information on the internet. In our 2007 blog we pointed out the huge impact of “Web 2.0”. Web users have embraced social networking. The increasing prevalence of rich-media content being created and shared by both individual users and organisations has also had a massive impact. And that’s not to mention the mobile web explosion…
So, yes, we weren’t exactly spot-on with our estimates. But in this instance we’re more than happy to be proven wrong. We’re excited about the implications that the web expansion has for the creative and analytical aspects of our industry, and also excited on a purely geeky level; a zettabyte is an insane amount of data.

As Mobile web becomes more and more common we start to see new applications and ways to encourage users to get onto go mobile. In the past 12 months we have seen the introduction of unlimited mobile internet from numerous providers around the UK, which is available on a number of different handsets.
Approximately 8 months ago Three made a push to encourage users to talk free with Skype, which seemed like a great idea but with handsets not being able to keep up with mobile speeds and still limit number of people on Skype and other online VOIP applications the success was not as some expected, including myself.
A regular browse on a PDA will show websites, but eh styling of 99% are not web based and even if there are most of the time they never fit my phone quite right. The introduction of automated Mobile Website Creators by taking a standard RSS feed and changing the content to an image free site has changed some sites, but once again cross platform integration is still limited.
So what will the G1 bring? After reviewing all the specs it offers pretty much the same as good old standard windows mobile, a few advancements here and there but nothing that stands out and says ‘ we are now ready for all web users’. Google have investing some time in developing the ‘featured’ products, which are also available through normal browsing but have helped to make the use of them on the G1 much easier and for anyone who users Google for the entire work space it will be a great improvement and time saver.
Other mobile companies such as Apple are working with Google to upgrade their phones standard to compete with the G1 and it will be great to see more web friendly phones and hopefully in the near future the use of social marketing and an advertising sponsored network to boast mobile web into all UK handset owners.

Over recent weeks and months Google have heavily invested millions of dollars into its own mobile phone project including meeting and talking with numerous mobile operators all over the world. But just what is the Google mobile project?
Reuters have announced that Google have talked with ‘Taiwan’s High Tech Computer’ to design and develop a mobile phone based on Linux, which should be launched within the first three months of 2008.
So Google have a phone, but what network will I be able to use? Currently it looks like if you are within the UK that you would need to be on the Orange network and in the US T-Mobile.
